Jenny Hval

Norwegian recording artist and writer Jenny Hval’s work is uniquely positioned as both multidisciplinary and transgressive, but her polyphonic artistry in fact seamlessly weaves musical, literary, visual and performative modes of expression. Her artistic voice is present, accessible and obscurely complex at the same time.

Leading up to her acclaimed 2016 solo album, Blood Bitch, Hval has received thoughtful and widespread international acclaim for her fascinating voice, singular delivery and non-traditional arrangements. The New York Times defines her writing as “taking a scalpel to the subjects of gender politics and sexuality.” Hval has eloquently brought to light issues in the blind spot of both the male and female gaze; subjects nominally discarded or denied all together. It’s because of her conceptual take on collective and individual gender identities and sociopolitical constructs that landed her lauded 2015 release Apocalypse, girl on dozens of year end lists and compelled writers everywhere to grapple with the question: What is Soft Dick Rock?
